Explore the Master in Computational Science at USI
The Master in Computational Science at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) is a comprehensive programme designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in computational science. Based at our Lugano campus and completely taught in English, the programme fosters abstract thinking within a methodology and application-oriented framework, enabling students to tackle complex models across various application areas.
This innovative programme offers a unique combination of methodological competences in data science, algorithmics, and computing, catering to those aspiring to work as quantitative analysts in industry or computational scientists in academia. Tailored to meet the diverse interests and career aspirations of students, the Master in Computational Science programme offers two specialised tracks:
- High-Performance Computing (HPC): Focuses on advanced computing and optimisation techniques suitable for careers in fields requiring intensive computational capabilities.
- Data Science: Emphasises data analysis and interpretation for understanding complex systems, appealing to those interested in exploring interconnected phenomena.
In addition to its core offerings, the Master in Computational Science provides the opportunity for a double degree in collaboration with partner universities including FAU (Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen-Nürnberg), LUT (Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology in Lappeenranta, Finland), POLIMI (Politecnico di Milano), SU (Sorbonne University), and UNIBO (Università di Bologna). This enriching opportunity maximizes students' educational development and provides exposure to different countries and contexts, enhancing their professional and personal growth.

As soon as I began working, I immediately noticed the value of the knowledge gained during my master's programme. You learn techniques that are directly applicable in real-life scenarios through personal or group projects. This not only enhances your technical skills but also develops your soft skills, which are crucial for collaboration within companies. Another benefit is the small class sizes, offering a great opportunity for one-to-one contact with professors. Overall, it's a very well-conducted programme that sets students on a path towards a brighter future.
