The future needs Data Scientists

We often hear the phrase "data is the new oil",  meaning that it is a precious resource that needs to be refined and processed to be turned into something valuable. This is why data science plays a crucial role in today's world by enabling organizations to extract meaningful insights and make informed decisions based on vast amounts of data. With its interdisciplinary approach combining statistics, mathematics, programming, and domain knowledge, data science empowers scientists and organizations to uncover patterns, trends, and correlations that might otherwise remain hidden.

The bachelor's degree in data science offered by Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) holds significant importance due to its comprehensive curriculum that equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the increasingly data-driven world.

The bachelor is taught entirely in English and it is provided jointly by the faculty of Informatics and Economics. In the first semesters students gain solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, and programming, while at the same time learning about data manipulation, machine learning and data modeling techniques. Then, based on their preferences, from the fourth semester on students are given the possibility to choose between two streams: one in Informatics, focusing on methodological aspects, and another on in Finance & Economics, focusing more on applied aspects.

Overall, this B.Sc. degree in data science prepares individuals for diverse career opportunities in industries ranging from finance and healthcare to marketing and technology, where data-driven decision-making has become integral to success. Data science graduates have a plethora of career opportunities in the role of data scientist, data analyst, data engineer, data consultant, business analysts, with very competitive starting salaries. The USI's bachelor's degree also connects to a variety of quantitative master opportunities, both inside Switzerland and abroad.

The Faculty of Informatics is located in the East Campus of the Università della Svizzera italiana. The exact address is via La Santa 1, Lugano (Switzerland).

The Campus has a number of shared spaces, a multi-purpose hall, an exhibition space, a canteen, a crèche and sports areas. It hosts around 600 members of staff, 1,000 students on the basic programme and 800 students in continuing education.

You can reach the university from Lugano train station in 9 minutes by taking bus number 6 in the direction of Cornaredo and getting off at the "Campus Universitario" stop (you can find the bus schedule here).
